Two truck drivers were “burned beyond recognition” in a fatal I-81 crash Friday night, according to Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall.
Their tractor trailers were traveling southbound at about 10 p.m. near Exit 37 when one of them struck the guardrail on the east side of the roadway and then a bridge abutment, according to a press release from the coroner’s office.
The trailer of the first rig then went into the path of the other rig and was struck.
Both vehicles caught fire after impact, and both drivers were burned so severely they will need to be identified with dental records, according to Hall’s press release.
The crash is still being investigated by state police.
South Central PA First Alert commented on its Facebook page that weather conditions were likely a factor. Rain was falling heavily in Cumberland County at that time.
No other details were immediately available.
